Vibration energy harvesting
8power are pioneering the use of vibration energy harvesting (VEH) devices for industrial sensors. From our beginnings at the University of Cambridge we are bringing the benefits of this emerging technology to industry. With recent advances in sensors, new low power wireless networks and cloud processing the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has come of age. However, the problem of powering systems in the field at low cost, efficiently and for extended periods has remained unsolved. Wired power is an option but comes with the costs and reliability of installing cables in an industrial environment. Batteries provide an alternative power solution and are good in certain applications. What is really needed is a renewable power source that can operate maintenance free, for up to 10 years. 8power VEH delivers this.
HOW IT WORKS
8power’s VEH technology produces electrical power from the vibration of an asset such as a motor, pump or gearbox. Using a micro generator electrical power is provided for sensors and wireless communication. Excess energy not required to run the system is stored locally in a small, industrial rechargeable cell to allow the device to operate and report when the asset is idle.
Depending on the vibration environment our devices can continuously monitor an asset and send regular condition data and status messages using either Bluetooth™ 5/Bluetooth Low Energy – long range and mesh as well as next generation cellular LPWAN networks such as NB-IoT and LTE CAT-M1.
In our research pipeline we are also looking at an innovative use of Parametric Resonance. By using this patented technology, 8power’s devices can harvest between 3 and 5 times the power of similar sized devices. This allows for higher powered sensors, more local computing and more frequent reporting.
